I've been slacking big time at updating this blog, nothing much, only have been a little busier with baking and decorating.

Here're some (i've been slacking on taking photos too) of the hantaran and wedding cakes I did the last few months. Thank you to all my customers, most of whom are the fiancée and brides whose name are on the cakes; others are as gifts from their family and friends.

I don't make wired gumpaste flowers bouquet mainly because I just don't know how to arrange the flowers properly. So... if i'm provided with sample picture of cakes topped with ready made store bought as reference, I'll just follow through. These flowers are unpalatable and maybe are inedible too.

Age is just a number ? Hmm.....

To me, the excitement of birthday celebrations diminishes once you have to add another digit to the age. And...after 30, most people i know would prefer not to be reminded of it and 'celebration'(?) is limited with those closest to you....

Anyway, I like birthdays, the very least it gives you a reason to eat cake, and let me continue baking them :-D

For a dear friend for her son's 1st birthday celebration. Number 1 cake with photos I copied from her FB. I really like this little pic of them, love and laughter... it's contagious... i can't stop smiling.

I watched Eclipse recently, love that old sweaters quilt Bella received from her mom, and also it reminded me of the photo quilt in the movie Stepmom . I'm bad at finishing my needlework projects (i have loads of unfinished cross stitches, beads on baju kurungs and yna's hat, sofa pillow covers, jeans hem alteration etc... etc... stashed somewhere in the house), so... i won't jump into quilting just yet . For now, i'm just as happy to be doing quilt patterns on cake. Anymore takers? Thanks Tie...

For my son's joint birthday celebration with his cousin. (This is the 1st b'day cake i ever baked for him)

For my regular customer, a kindy nearby, Tadika Fitrah Ehsan. They have been ordering one, two or sometimes three cakes almost every other Thursdays. And i just love to hear their "wow..." everytime they see the cakes, even for this ugly not really smooth fresh cream topping, lucky me!

An old photo of a two digits cake I made a few months ago, back when the number moulds suddenly appears on the racks of all the bakery supply shops in this area; they weren't available previously. Errr... yes, i was so excited and bought two moulds, even though the cake order was only for 1kg :-) . Thanks Firah.. dah banyak orders u yg lain masuk yang ni baru nak post pic.

It's definitely high time to update this blog when calls and messages I've been receiving lately started with "..do u still bake?", "...are u accepting orders now?", "...dok buat kek lagi dak?" or something to that effect :-)
June has been a pretty hectic month for me, so many orders especially for 0606 I was not able to accept, I'm sorry.
I noticed that many couples (& their families I guess) choose bold colors for this mid year school holiday wedding season.
1) Black & White (& Silver too)

Black & white cake ordered through a baker friend As. Design requested was from a picture in Saji magazine sent via mms. I like the zebra stripes around the cake but couldn't quite make out what were the flowers in that pic, thus gave me a good reason to try making these 3 anemone flowers. I don't like using those inedible flower stamens but since the design in that pic uses wired flowers, I guess the bride is okay with this.

Another order received via a baker friend too, Nina. The butterflies were made similar to the ones on the round hantaran box. Hubby who rarely makes any comment about the cakes I make liked this one; but then again most of his shirts are either black or white....

Ordered by my regular customer Reen for her sister's wedding. Would really love to add some black royal icing swirl designs to overcome my guilty feeling for not making her previous cupcake order for the engagement ceremony similar to the picture she gave. I even bought the pattern press set by wilton to design the swirls, maybe next time lah...

2) Gold and Yellow

Ordered by Nani for her bro's wedding. I always use bright yellow for gold themed cake, but I think I made a mistake on this one because the hantaran sets on the back of Nani's car (she was on her way to Terengganu for the bride's wedding) were in pale shades of gold, beige and brown. I'm sorry Nani, hope the 'unwanted' yellow color provided some contrast to the hantaran trays.

Ordered by Isa, the weddiing planner who attended Wani & Razif's wedding and saw the hantaran cakes I made a week earlier. This was for a wedding in Alor Setar.

Ordered by Cikgu Hanim for one of her cousin's engagement ceremony. The cupcakes were not heavily decorated with fondant pieces to let the gold shines (??? ha ha ha.... lame excuse, actually i didn't have enough time to decorate because the order delivery date was brought 2 days earlier than planned)

The one I was so excited about, because it's different. A set of 61 cupcakes (rows of 5+6+7+8+9+8+7+6+5 = 61) joined to form a hexagon pull-away cupcakes on a 20" round cakeboard. The hardest part was smoothing the icing and having to extend my arm to fill the alphabets in the center. This is ordered by Kak Nani for her neighbor's son wedding reception held in Pusat Budi Penyayang hall in Kepala Batas. Heard that they forgot to order tiered wedding cake, thus this was used for the "cupcake pulling" ceremony :-).

Matching cupcakes that take some of the design elements from the above cupcakes cake was made to complement it. Heard that the cupcakes were gone quickly and even Kak Nani didn't get to taste it.

One of the great advantages about being a baker, u can just give a cake as a present. This is for hubby's cousin who lives near our house. It was her first daughter's wedding, this cake was for makan-makan with their neighbors who've helped a lot on the wedding day. My first attempt at making buttercream basketweave around a cake.....

3) Blue n Green

2 orders from Nani delivered to her parents' place. I had a great time at their house, especially watching Nani's 2 year old triplets playing and also chatting with Nani's dad who was a MSD official in london during the asian financial crisis in 1997.
Cupcake design given by Nani was from Rani of bakedecorate2u, sorry I missed out the green leaf on the cupcakes :-)

The order from Izan for her sis, Hidayah's wedding. The delivery date of 0606 was booked 3 months earlier.
Sorry Izan, because so many things went wrong with this order. The fondant was so brittle and the only shop that sold the Halagel gelatine I use was closed for 3 days, so I had to use the ready made white roses (had they sell deep purple ones, i'll definitely get those too)
The top tier was only 6", no stackable cake board for that size to hold it in place. So, the top tier slide on the way and broke at least 2 petals on the purple roses on the side of the top tier :-(

Ordered by Nasuha, insisted it to be exactly like the one I did about a year ago :-)

Pink and green cupcakes ordered by As for her cousin's engagement

Pink and light purple cupcake with photos of her fiance-to-be. Order received via the cake kiosk at Giant hypermart.

I was very sure I wouldn't have enough time to spend on this order even though it came about 3 weeks before; so I accepted Johanah's order with the condition that I'd use ready made flowers, and was so happy when I found these red lilies exactly like the picture she sent. So, I only made the large flowers and the cupcakes.
I usually prefer to deliver tiered cakes myself, but was so sorry that I couldn't send this order to Baling because my schedule was so packed that weekend :-( The two cakes were glued to the boxes to avoid it from sliding around inside the box during transport.

Wedding Cake... and muffins too

I was so happy to be given another opportunity to make a wedding cake. Ordered by Yana, Nani's friend who liked my first tiered cake i did for Nani's wedding. Thanks so much Nani & Yana.
The cake didn't resemble much to the sample pic sent, my error in making the top tier too big and I didn't have enough fondant roses (and no time to make some more) to fully cover the top surface. A message sent by Yana and yet another order from their friends indicate that maybe they still loved this cake after all. Thanks girls !

Yana also ordered a thousand muffins to as gifts for her guests. For weeks i was concerned about how long it would take me to bake these muffins. So I bought a new industrial oven, which now takes up the only empty counter top space in my little kitchen. It turned out that the slowest process was not baking the muffins, it was packing them. Was soooo glad that my mom and her helper came over to help. Thanks mak & dayah...

So..... to those who were wondering why I could't take your orders or why the "closed" banner on this blog for that last week in April, now you know....

Strawberry and Cake

Besides using strawberry for the topping, it's a good idea to dice them as cake filling so that there's some in every slice of the cake. I decided to give it a try after seeing it done in a few episodes of Cake Boss. I think the strawberries subdue the sweetness and richness of these cake and cheesecake. But, the tricky part of using strawberry is that you should use whip cream for the topping, and trying to smooth the topping is not so easy.

The cake in these pics were made a few weeks ago using M'sian CH and Korean strawberries. My favorite Driscoll strawberry is available at the nearby Giant store this week, and at a reasonable price, thanks to the current forex rate i guess.

BC Swirls and lines... for short notice orders

Buttercream swirls and lines is definitely my choice for orders for next day or same day pick up..... such as these.
From Cikgu Ros whom I met about 6 months ago at Yna's kindergarten. I guess these little cuppies are for her students and fellow teachers for an undisclosed celebration :)

Ordered by a cakes & snacks supply kiosk at the shopping complex nearby. They usually placed their order at 10pm the night before, and usually left the design entirely up to me :)

But, there are also some who specifically chose the swirls and lines design even when their orders were placed a few days/weeks in advance :D Thank you all!

Red and Black and White

I think such bold color choices are quite rare in our traditional wedding. Order from Amilia who came over to pick up the cakes after their solemnization ceremony, all the way from Serdang, Kedah.
Making the royal icing drop flowers in deep red and black was as tricky as I had expected because of the large amount of coloring gel needed. The pieces didn't dry cement hard and was so brittle; I broke a few pieces while assembling them on the cake. Was glad that Amilia agreed with my request to use fondant on the black n white themed cake.

Coach, Ariani etc... themed cupcakes

I've recorded and watched every show of Cake Boss airing on astro since march.... and it's bringing back my interest in using fondant for cake decor.
This is ordered for a dear friend Mama, by her hubby Man (thanks...). A Coach theme was requested but i suggested to add Ariani theme too, since Mama is a big fan of Ariani's scarves. Finding original Ariani designs is harder than I thought since there're so many out there with an "ala" prefix to that brand. So, i narrowed down my choices to only the ones worn by Ekin and designs which can easily be replicated using fondant cutters. The scarf with blue flowers print was worn by Mama during one of the mini reunion with our friends. As for the Coach theme, I love these bright colors from one of their OpArt range and a blue Charm tote to match Mama's scarf :)

As for my reason for this long hiatus, ermmmmm... it's somewhere there between the short trip to Terengganu, spending time with my mom, laziness, lost the comm cable for the camera....etc... etc..
... I just love driving to Terengganu, the most scenic road in Malaysia (to my family at least) is definitely the stretch between Kuala Besut to Batu Rakit. We had the sweetest ayaq nyoq (coconut drink) when we stopped for a little picnic in Batu Rakit, the deserted beach has not changed much from the last 30 years, i can still remember the ocassional 5km evening jogging along the beach when I attended the mrsm nearby...

Boys... when they are a lot bigger they absolutely MUST choose an EPL team to support, and the popular choice will be any one of the big 4s .... MU, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool (ranked according to their current standings, before 03rdApril mind you)
But, if you don't have one yet (really?) do read this suggestion by an American, it's an old (2006) article, i find it so amusing, especially the part "I don't care who you pick, just don't pick Manchester United" LOL!

This set was ordered by Naley for her bf. The numbers on the jersey must hold a special meaning for them, because I couldn't find the player names for number 3 and 7 (according to this season line-up), thus decided to remove all the names from the jersey images. Arrangement of the cupcakes is as requested by Naley, thanks for ordering....

And some (bigger) boys still find the time to go to school despite their busy work schedule and family commitments. This was ordered by Ann (thanks) for her hubby Paul,who recently completed his Masters degree. Congratulations!

Boys... when they're toddler, Sesame Street is usually one of their favorite shows.
Imran is sooooo super cute, ooohhh... that smile could just melt your heart..... wish i could pinch those chubby cheeks! The choice of Sesame Street image was from mommy herself, thanks Suheila.
Making this cake reminds me of how much my daughter Yna loves Elmo when she was three or four, I had to call up every Toys R US stores in KL trying to find one when they launched "Tickle Me Elmo". Well.... she's past that stage now, otherwise we'd have to get her the new "Elmo Live" :)

Boys... when they're preschoolers or in primary school, suddenly their favorite cartoons becomes gender biased. Every little boy I know just love Ben10 and Transformers. Thank you Asmawati.... harapnya ramai lagi anak sedara nak mintak cupcakes ada gambar :)
My son Syamil helped me with the selection of popular Autobots and Decepticons to put on those cuppies... Optimus Prime, BumbleBee, Sideswipe and Megatron. (three good robots against one villain, this isn't fair!)

Getting orders from customers who emphasize the words "exactly" when referring to the cake i've made before sometimes worries me, because I always try to make some improvement.
The railway track is made of black colored fondant on this one, looks better than the buttercream piping on the previous.

The chocolate fondant planks 'sweat' when taken out of the fridge, and having to deliver it around noon just made it worse :( Thanks Lina for ordering, hope the cake was okay when u received it.
Chef Khairy gave a brief demo on chocolate plastique yesterday, his advise was... to remove as much fat as you can from the melted chocolate when u're mixing it with glucose / corn syrup; will try that next time.

This fondant covered cake is definitely better than the previous one :)

The March equinox will be on 20March2010 at 17:32. But, it certainly feels like it already (even in our tropical country), it has been raining in the afternoon since the past 3 days. Hope this will be the end to the long hot & humid weather we had for the past 3 months; and lower electric bill now that the air cond can be turned off for most of the day; i think it's simply ridiculous to be running the oven and air cond at the same time in the kitchen.
And since it's also 1 week school holiday.... 'tis the season to get married ... or engaged

Ordered by the bride Shima, for her orange themed wedding. Thanks Shima, I've conquered my fear of making royal icing covered cake. The drop flowers turned out quite okay I think, being a first timer at making these. With the addition of glycerin, the royal icing did not set cement hard, suitable for the cake cutting ceremony. This is a good option for those who does not like fondant covered cakes but still wants a cake that can withstand our mostly hot and humid weather.

And an order from Hidayah for her friend's purple themed wedding. It was meant for hantaran initially but was used for the cake cutting ceremony. Thanks.

Cakes n Cupcakes for the Girls

This order was from my daughter's friend. My swirl roses have slightly improved, many thanks to KamalinaCakes for sharing her method, use Wilton nozzle 224 and 103

When my friend Ti asked me to bake some fun cupcakes for her friend's 3 year old daughter I immediately chose Fifi and the Flower Tots and Strawberry Shortcake, although they're not that popular in Malaysia because it has not been aired on Astro for quite some time.

Another order from Ti is a tiramisu cake for one of her best friend at school. I think this is probably the 5th tiramisu cake ordered by the teachers at SMKM. Ti and her friends are hardcore fans of the Twilight series, and I think they are definitely anticipating the Twilight Eclipse screening in June, in 3d! The initial plan was to put Edward's pic but received an email just a few moment before I print, to have Kecum's newborn 'prince' and Kecum's other half pic instead.

There are so many variants of Tiramisu out there, this is the recipe I have been using
Cream Cheese                200g (mascarpone preferred, otherwise use Tatura, it's less acidic than Philly)
UHT Whipping Cream    200g
White Couverture Choc   150g
Sponge Cake                   300g, sliced into two
Savoiardi Lady Fingers    enough to cover one layer
Nescafe 3in1                   2packs
Nescafe Regular              1 tsp
Hot water                         1 cup

Beat cream cheese till smooth set aside

Whisk UHT Whipping Cream until about triple the volume (not too stiff) set aside
Melt courverture chocolate using double boil/ bain marie method and add fold into whipping cream.
Take about 3 tablespoon of cream cheese add to white choc/whip cream and fold the mixture into the cream cheese.

Mix the two kinds of nescafe with hot water to dissolve and set aside to cool in a bowl

Put a layer of sponge cake on bottom of removable base cake pan, and spread half of the cream cheese mixture.
Dip the lady fingers half of its side and flip it onto the other side, so that it won't become soggy
.
Arrange the dipped lady fingers on the cream cheese layer

Spread another layer of cream cheese. Place the spongecake piece, or sieve some cocoa powder.
Top the spongecake with whipping cream or choc ganache, voila !

And... for Ti who's recuperating at home after a kidney surgery, I bring her these.... for her kids

Take care Ti! Advise from Ti to everyone, drink more water, eat less meat. Hmm...I still can't hit the 3liter per day target set by my Herbalife consultant

MU is probably doing better (after Cristiano left), since this is the 1st order for MU themed cupcakes I received this season. Maybe it's for celebration of them winning the Carling Cup recently. And the next match everyone's waiting for will be on 10th March against AC Milan at Old Trafford, Becks is Back !
Despite all the above excitement..... I'm happy that Chelsea still tops the Premier League table and I keep receiving hundreds of edible images for cupcakes with Chelsea's and Arsenal logos.... :-D

To me, one of the greatest joy of baking is seeing a child gleefully smiles when looking at their birthday cake. With edible image, that happens quite a lot, especially the ones where there's a picture of them together with their favorite cartoon character(s).

To those whose cake pics are not posted, I'm so sorry. My daughter Yna was experimenting with "what things float and what doesn't" while being left at home with Dad. One of the item, needless to say, is our previous Sony CyberShot , submerged in a mug of tea! Maybe it did survived for a while, since the last image stored seems like an underwater video, ha ha ha.

These pics were taken using 'my' (?) new Cybershot Exmor, and I'm still fumbling with the settings.

My wish of getting a DSLR was shot down with hubby's remarks that the DSLR will suffer the same fate as our camcorder, nobody wants to carry it around their neck when we go on holidays (which has not happen since hmmm.... so long ago) :-(

Another new project for me, wedding gift cupcakes with the bride & groom pictures.
This photo cupcake is the appropriate wedding gift, in my opinion. I've attended many wedding kenduris without even knowing the bride & groom, usually because the invitations were from the couple's parents and we usually couldn't stay long enough to watch the 'bersanding' ceremony.

Fondant topped cupcakes in Purple and Green theme were also ordered for the exchange of gifts/hantaran ceremony.

To my customers who were wondering why I couldn't take your orders since the last 2 weeks, this is the main reason . I was so nervous about making my first tiered wedding cake

Cake consists of 10" and 6" vanilla cake (the bride's favorite) and an 8" sugee fruit cake. I think other than the turquoise and pink colors being a tad too bold, it turned out quite okay, thanks Nani for trusting me with this task for your special day. Nani ordered her 2-tier wedding cake from me since last October, her initial request involved molding figurines, but she changed her mind a month ago, much to my relief : )

This makeshift cake stand and cake knives were also included.

The covered cakes and fondant pieces prior to the stacking process. The arduous task of kneading and rolling the fondant were a little easier on this removable faux marble coffee table top.

Nani also ordered some cupcakes as 'hantaran' to the groom's side. The color theme was fuchsia, but... even with 100% magenta settings on the printer the edible image still didn't turned out nearly as bright as seen on Illustrator.

Army Themed Cake ?

When I changed my mind and accepted this order on such short notice, my request to K Zaini was to use edible image as the decor. (K Zaini has helped a lot to promote my little cake biz to her colleagues and family)
The gold color came out as lemon yellow after printed, so I painted gold dust to provide a liitle contrast to the other yellow color on the logo. Wanted to add some color, but it was already late and I didn't know which component is Anas attached to, the navy, air force or land force.
Glad that K Zaini and her family liked the "rasa macam aiskrim" cake, i.e. moist choc cake with whip cream and choc fudge filling. Thanks...

The Color Turquoise

To me turquoise simply means a color when you can't really say if it's green or blue; and is created by mixing sky blue and leaf green icing colors.

Pantone.com announced that turquoise is the Color of the Year for 2010. It's only January, and I already did 2 cakes with turquoise theme, well... they might be right.

Order from Mas for her friends at the bank. I like these colorful cupcake boxes, but... they are a little too expensive, and the guy at the shop said it's their last pack. I only realized that the "z" alphabet looks more like an "x" in Kunstler Script font after I've printed all the edible images! Sorry Mas, and thanks for ordering

Choux Pastry

Choux Pastry (well... cream puff actually) has intrigued me for so long.... The first time I looked at someone making it was 25years ago, during a tea party at our high school counselor's house. My sisters always told me, " senang aja, macam belajar dalam kelas SRT" (it's easy, like how we learned in SRT). Hey... I didn't take SRT, it was not even in the syllabus in mrsm; and i've never seen my sis made them either.
So.... I attended a pastry workshop last week by Chef Alan Ooi. Here's the pic of my creation :0

After 2 failed attempts at home (the ones we made at the workshop were okay), I tried again and decided to take some photos, and this time I used the mixer instead of using my hand muscles to beat the sticky dough. The detailed instruction with (much better) photos can be found at Delia Online

If I'm going to make these again, I'll bake it longer to brown it, and slit the chouxs to let the steam out after baking. Looking at how Yna popped these little munchkins into her mouth (after being piped with whip cream+custard filling), I know I'll be making some more very soon. Here's the recipe I used, using easy to remember numbers

50g butter

100g water

50g flour

1tsp sugar

2 eggs (100g)

My hubby's aunt ordered a cake for her grandkids to enjoy, and the 2 kids really did enjoy this cake, half of it is already gone while I was enjoying my laksa kebuk.
Laksa kebuk (in our family) is fresh home made noodles made from wheat flour, not from rice flour like the dried kind sold in grocery shops. Kebuk is the hand press used to squeeze the dough through, so i guess u can make the dough from semolina or rice and still call it laksa kebuk, ....... as long as it's served with fish based gravy :)

Satisfied with the last Thomas n Friends themed cake, Hanani ordered another chocolate cake, this time for her niece's birthday in Gerik. Glad that my choice for the pink background was right, it's Uzma's favorite color. The only Disney Princess my daughter Yna likes is also Aurora, simply because she's the one princess that always wears pink.

My solution to make the white courverture ganache filling taste a little more like chocolate, add pure cocoa butter (the one with slightly yellowish color, the cheaper very white ones are made of and taste like sugar and shortening) I read that white chocolate is not considered chocolate by US FDA since it has no chocolate liqueur or cocoa solids. And btw... chocolate liqueur is halal (i.e. without alcohol), refer here www.ifanca.org/glossary

I've been wanting to make a train themed cake for quite some time, thus was really excited when I received an order for Thomas & Friends cake from Hanani. Nani even willing to come all the way from Penang island to pick up her order, thanks Nani.

Her order was for a chocolate cake with fudge filling, but I thought I would be too unappealing for little Thaqif, so I added a white chocolate whip cream layer too. Looking at how Yna just scrape all the leftover from the mixing bowl into her mouth I just hope that Thaqif would like it too.

Anyway... i'm still searching for a better tasting white choc, the couverture I have tasted more like condensed milk than chocolate :(

There's not much excitement with this season's EPL in our house, much of it I think because Asyraf (my nephew) is still confined to the bed after his spinal injury 5 months ago. This order came on such short notice, I left it with my helper for the customer to pick-up; now I realized I didn't even get her name. Her request was for 10 Arsenal logo cupcakes, with the balance left for me to choose whatever flowery image I like. I must have had a short term craze for swirls and spent the whole evening looking for swirl designs and even put up an order for the AI templates from Kerawang.net ! (Actually, I do like their designs, they seem a lot softer with traditional malay flair)

Ordered by Ja all the way from Langkawi.Cupcakes with five red roses and a white rose (only Ja knows what the roses mean). This is the first time I received a delivery request to an address without any Taman, Apt or Jalan prefix to it :)
Finding the house wasn't that difficult since I've been there a few times visiting a friend (she still has the strength to drive every week to KL to work, I've given up all the traveling since the past 2++ years). With a little guide from Ja over the phone and asking a makcik to point me Najmi's house, I arrived at brightly painted house that sits on a carpet of lush green grass. It was a beautiful sight indeed, a lot different from my mom and mil's house where grass is treated the same as weed, so what's left was just sand and gravels. Me, I'm glad I managed to save my little plot of grass in front of the house from being covered with cement and tiles by the renovation contractor (at hubby's instruction) a few years back.
I learnt a good lesson too delivering this order, when in kampung don't ask where is this and that house number, over here everyone knows each other by name. And.... spare some time to sit down and chat with the makciks :0

First order from Mas for her good friend, wanted the cupcakes deco in beige theme.

Second order, from Firah for her sis (in gold theme) and also for the entourage from her fiance-to- be's side (in green theme).

I'm wondering, next.... would the wedding date be set to 011010(Friday) or 101010 (Sunday) and the belanja set to RM10, +++ :)

Starting with the above orders, I will only make the full fondant topped cupcakes in medium size, this way I'm able fill 30% more cake volume compared to the tiny 2oz souffle cups I've been using previously... all with a little price increase, especially since the price of icing sugar has increased 50% in less than a year and decorating with fondant is very time consuming

The simple design for these purple themed cupcakes was made based on a picture sent by Fara Nissa. Our communication was only done thru emails, I only realized that I didn't have her phone number only an hour before Fara's requested delivery time. Luckily her house was quite easy to find....

This set was requested by my neighbor Farah for her friends, in pink and maroon theme. Had to make do with the 8"X8" which was a little small since the only shop that sell the 16-holes cupcake box was closed for the holidays. The couple came over two days earlier to have their pics printed on icing sheet, I completed the editing and printing in just half an hour, with a little additional charge for their urgent request. Thanks Yati, Wani & Shukri.

P/S To my customers, sorry for the long silence and missing pics/entries of some of your orders. I was in a hurry completing them before leaving for our routine end of the year holidays :) ....this time was to kampung Kay Ell. Also, Yna has started going to the 'real' school (that's what she calls it) i.e. primary school.

Everytime Emi, age 21, called me Chik (aunty), i'm reminded how old hubby and I are. Then again, I remember that all my school/uni friends' makcik and pakcik (aunts and uncles who are the second last daughter or son to your grandparents) that I knew were the most fun & hippiest amongst all the other aunts and uncles, lol

Emi ordered this to surprise her friend at Pulau Rebak, Langkawi. I think this 2kg 3 layers chocolate and vanilla sponge cake with raspberry and chocolate fudge filling, survived the long drive and boat ride to that island because I received message from Emi later saying "...everyone loves the cake, delicious..." That coming from those who are so used to eating their 5-star resort' desserts, i am so very happy :D

My first attempt at making buttercream roses, I think they look more like cabbages than pink roses :(

Friends Forever

Aisyah ordered these cupcakes for her friends and kids, message requested were simply "Friends Forever" and "Ibu Loves You". The order was received around 9am for pickup at 7pm. Cupcakes were packed in boxes of six.
Glad I was able to complete Aisyah's order despite having to send Sue to the orthodontist. Dentists' office are always full in December with everyone trying to make use of their yearly dental benefit; wish that Sue's braces were covered in hubby's family dental plan too, ha! ha! ha! We've been paying for monthly checkup, etc... for more than 2 years.

Cupcakes with Gray(?) Logos

Printing these logos made me notice something new, the printer/CMYK edible ink cannot print gray color. Adjusting the Cyan and Magenta levels did not help either, at least not in the amount of time I had to resolve the issue. This picture makes the logos seem a lot more greenish than they actually were.

The original logo of the campaign on the bank's webpage, white small fonts on textured gray background, provide very little contrast and almost invisible when printed at this size. So, I changed to larger font size on solid gray background.

Tiramisu Cake with Barbie Edible Image

The square cake pans with removable base are sold only in odd number square sizes at the bakery supply shops here. I wasn't sure why, maybe it was meant to accomodate the shrinking of spongecake after being cooled; i.e. my logic, bake the cake in the larger even number size pan and assemble it in the smaller odd number size pan, in this case 10" and 9" pans. (I always place a thin layer of chocolate spongecake at the base of the tiramisu cake to ease transferring from the pan base to the cake board).
Making these rectangular chocolate sheets was definitely much easier compared to forming it into a round/ring shape. But, superimposing the the pics of the girls onto two of the musketeers' face wasn't; although the Image-Equalize function in Photoshop did help.
The cheesecake filling was made using a (secret?) method revealed by Chef Khairy, a former chef of SR - white couverture chocolate to replace sugar in all their cheesecakes! The filling seems to set firmer faster this way despite the dairy whip cream being a little runny before mixing in the cream cheese/white chocolate mixture. And, I just love the taste, glad that I've made extra for my kids and their cousins who were spending their holidays here. Btw, I've given up trying to find mascarpone cheese around here, I'm now happy with the Anchor brand, less tangy than Philly, thus suitable for tiramisu.

Purple Wedding Fondant Cake

I could sense the worry in Reen's voice when she called me to order a full fondant covered hantaran cake for a purple & white themed wedding. My only assurance to her, I've attended the fondant cake decorating class and have a bucket of ready to use fondant for the job.
No gumpaste roses were made since I was overwhelmingly concerned about how to roll and transfer the rolled fondant onto the cake. My solution, roll it on a 14" cake board and slide it onto the cake. Didn't do it so well I must admit, so the ribbon and fondant ruffle were used to cover the bottom edges.
When I saw the smile on Reen's face and heard her short response "cantik...", I was so relieved, so is she, I think. Thanks Reen!

Today is 13th of Zulhijjah, the last day of Hari Raya Aidil Adha. Cikgu Salwa, my daughter's class teacher ordered these boxes of cupcakes to be given to her neighbors. Thank you Cikgu Salwa.
I am happy that Malaysia's KLK Cocoa / Barry Callebaut's chocolate has been given halal certification by Jakim. Their Selbourne bar was used it to make the choc ganache for these cupcakes.
The green cake boxes that I used are a little too large for the 6 cupcakes, so folded carboards were inserted to fill the void.

Birthday Cake.... with Wedding Picture

I've always printed the edible image as it was sent to me, i.e. shoulder height, waist height or full length. Looking at this cake I can't help thinking I should have cropped the picture to waist height and framed it. It would have saved me a lot of time removing the original background and finding a frame template for it which are available mostly in landscape orientation.
The dark chocolate ganache is poured over a thin layer of chocolate fudge covering on this cake, with a layer of strawberry puree and cream filling in the middle.
Thanks Mona for ordering; sorry I couldn't get you the fresh strawberries because it wasn't available at the only one hypermarket in Kulim... :-(

Joint Birthday - Barbie n Ultraman

Mas ordered this chocolate cake for a joint birthday, wanted edible image of Barbie for Awish and Ultraman for Danial. The most appropriate form of Barbie to match Ultraman Max is definitely her character in Barbie & the 3 Musketeers.

It is always a bad idea to try something new when you only have 3 hours to decorate the cake; I tried a new brand of better tasting whipping cream for the cream layer underneath the ganache and it just would not set. To stop the chocolate ganache from overflowing on the sides of the cake, I scrape off a thin layer and piped some buttercream instead.

P/S I learned from a baking class last weekend that spreading a layer of whipped cream on the cake and chill it before pouring the ganache on top will give you a smooth thin layer of ganache.

Soccer Field Cupcakes Cake

It's been months since I last made pull-away cupcakes cake. Since the order was for a soccer field shape, I opted to use 36 square mini cupcakes to form the 'field'.
Forgot to apply a little buttercream to the base of the cupcakes to stick them to the cake boards, I was lucky that my daughter Sue helped to hold the cake in place during the delivery trip to Sg Ara. The journey in my little perodua kancil with dead absorbers on the potholes ridden BM roads was indeed a long and bumpy ride...

Mickey & Friends Cupcakes

Zul informed me that his son's favorite Mickey's friend is Goofy, but we agreed it wouldn't be appropriate to put goofy's pic on the cake. I rarely received cake orders from a daddy, so when Zul mentioned it was for Hazim's 2nd birthday I was quite puzzled since his earlier query was for a number 3 cake. It was 2am on the delivery day when I realized this, so I went ahead to print "2nd".
Hariz indeed was going to celebrate his 3rd birthday, so the edible image was reprinted and overlapped on the previous one; the quickest fix within half hour since they are rushing to grandma's house to celebrate. Thanks for ordering Zul.

The weather has been quite chilly since the last few weeks (due to La Nina?, Artic ice caps melting?), so I was not really worried how far these buttercream topping cupcakes would travel to the groom's place. ( I usually advise my customers to order fondant topped cupcakes for hantaran)

Cheesecake Cupcakes, Fondant Teddy Bears

Last week I was reading my first few posts when I started this blog about 9 months ago and remembered that my initial excitement to start cupcakes decorating was from making those tiny fondant bears, pooh, eeyore, tigger etc... I haven't done those for a very long time mainly because I don't really enjoy molding with tightly gloved hands.
Anyway, when Niza ordered some blueberry and zebra cheese cupcakes for her anniversary, I suggested adding these little mom, dad & baby bears for the decor. Thanks Niza, Happy Anniversary!
I'm still reluctant to try the chocolate fondant widely sold at the shops; so I made mine by adding softened chocolate bar to the fondant dough.

30th Anniversary Cake

When I agreed to this order for number 30 cake weighing only 1 kg+, I was more concerned on getting the cake to fit on a 12" cake base. After I've assembled the cake, it's obvious that putting the two number pieces side by side was a bigger challenge; no wonder most 2-number cakes I googled were covered with fondant. When I slide the chilled & frosted number 0 piece to be aligned to the partially pre-piped icing border drawn on the base, it fell apart; arghhhh.... Luckily I need not worry so much about the decor since message from Firah was "....decor camna tak pa, yg penting bentuk 30....".

Thanks Firah for the order and congratulations on your parents' 30th anniversary. My hubby & i will be celebrating our 20th next year ..... ;-)

As for the heap of the 30% cake scraps, the kids finish it with drizzle of chocolate ganache and whip cream. Here's a pic of the naked cake formed using 2X4" ring pan, 1X4" round pan and 1X4" square pan.

Yna's Kindergarten Graduation

Yna has stopped going to her kindy since mid August; mostly due to Asyraf's 3-month hospitalization and Yna's nocturnal behavior that is so difficult to break (she sleeps after 3:00am, wakes up at 12:00pm). For the last few weeks I kept thinking that she won't be getting her first scroll to add to her personal file and what would my answer be when she asks about it in future. ( I still keep my kindy scroll from 35years ago, and of course her bro & sis have theirs too)
I was so relieved when the Cikgu Nab, the headmaster at Tadika Fitrah Ehsan invited us to join the graduation ceremony. Well, I think Yna deserves it too, since she's exceeded pre-school adequacy level of reading/writing/arithmetic. My regret however was that she was unable to join the performance, much to her disappointment too.

As a thank you gesture for the teachers and all the 4/5/6 years old kids at the kindy I baked these mini cupcakes for them. I didn't affix any labels on the individual cupcake plastic cases, thus was very happy that a few of the parents personally aprroached me and will become my customers soon.

The graduation robe & caps are pipings of choc fudge. Earlier, I made a batch of robes and caps using royal icing but they did not hardened; the reason was too much gel coloring added to make them black. To make matters worse, the cupcakes peeled away from the paper liners. I didn't want the cuppies to go to waste, so the liners were peeled off and the cupcakes were put into paper souffle cups. I googled about the peeling cupcakes problem, most i think was due to high butter/fat content. Fresh Fruits Cupcakes

Deciding suitable cupcakes for a guy can be tricky. My hubby for instance will only eat chocolate cupcakes with a dollop of chocolate fudge, nothing fancy schmancy.

Intan ordered these 16pcs fresh fruit cupcakes for her hubby's 30th birthday; her choice of fruit was strawberry, grapes and peaches. I ran out of cling peaches, replaced with canned mandarin orange segments instead.

Cupcakes topping was half/half dairy fresh cream/non-dairy whip cream. Reason being, most non-dairy cream are too sweet, dairy cream tastes better but has very little whip volume and turns watery too fast in our tropical weather.

Message from Intan later that night, "Tq...sedap n my husband luv it......." Thanks Intan.

Cheesecake Cupcakes

Cheesecake cupcakes, that's what I decided to call these tiny guilty pleasures.
Baked them last weekend, for the kids to take with them to their weekday hostels; since mommy's trying to stick to her herbalife diet plan; with only one or two (most of the time) cupcakes a day(shh... my 'wellness consultant' doesn't know that cupcake part yet) She's coming over tomorrow for my weekly progress charting. Errr...my progress??? i only lost 1kg in over a month! And no, i won't mention what the weighing scale (so called body composition monitor) says about my metabolic age.

Strawberry/raspberry and chocolate topping this time; there's a long list of other flavors i'm planning for future projects....and still wishing to shed a few more kgs along the way

Dora Cupcakes and Princess Cake

Elsie called from Perth to order these for her nieces. Cupcakes with Dora images for Kakak (older sister), and a pink princess cake for Adik (younger sister); both sets with the girls' pics too. I arrived at a spacious apartment with the doors wide open. The wind was blowing softly, smoke and noise from the busy Penang streets just disappear at this top floor of the apartment block.
I was greeted by Elsie's mom, standing beside her was a very sweet little girl which I immediately recognized as adik was also waiting, and... she was wearing a Dora t-shirt! I felt my heart skipped a beat, did I swapped Elsie's instructions? Alhamdulillah... i found out later that i didn't.

Later in the evening Elsie called again just to inform me that the girls and her mom liked the cakes very much. I've also started building Bakeryna pages on Facebook as suggested by Elsie. Thanks so much Elsie!

Cheesecake Cups / Cheese Cupcakes

I'm not sure what is the correct word for cheesecake baked in cupcakes liners.

I tried this nice recipe by Chef Asma recently. The pics above really do not do justice for these wonderfully creamy, not too sweet cheesecake cups. Here's the half recipe

CHEESE CUP CAKE

INGREDIENTS FOR THE CRUST :
240 gm Marie biscuits crumbs } Combined crumbs and melted butter.
250 gm melted butter } Press onto bottom of cup cake cases / liners

INGREDIENTS FOR CHEESE CAKE :
( A ) 250 gm cream cheese
38 gm castor sugar
75 ml UHT whipping cream
2 nos egg yolk
1/4 nos lemon rind
45 gm cake flour

( B ) 2 nos egg white
38 gm castor sugar
1/2 tbsp lemon juice
10 gm corn flour

METHOD :
1. Beat cream cheese untill smooth, add in sugar and beat until creamy.
2. Add in UHT whipping cream and beat until smooth.
3. Add in egg yolk and mix well.
4. Add in all ingredients, mix well and leave aside.
5. Whisk egg white,sugar and lemon juice untill stiff. Add in corn flour into the
egg white.
6. Combined A& B , mix together, . Add in flavour or decoration.
7. Pour mixture onto biscuit crust and bake ( steambaked ) for 20 minutes - 30 minutes

Yield 12 pieces of size M Solo cups.
Top the cheesecakes with chocolate ganache or ready made fruit filling.

Today is the last day of Syawal, which reminds me to put up this pic of some of the cupcakes ordered by Sue's teacher for her raya open house gathering recently.
The funny thing about the pic above is that I've been getting remarks "deepavali cupcake" when anyone look at the pic. I think I've figured out what's wrong, the "pelita" are without "sumbu"; i.e. the wick holder! That's what happened when you were rushing to decorate at 2am in the morning........

New workplace, new friends

At the young age of 21 and after completing her certification course, Emi already owns her own shop, thanks to her very supporting parents. The shop has now pay for itself when the government is renting it as a training center, including utilisation of all the equipment. So, with all the free time on her hands Emi is going off to an island to gain more experience.

Twilight New Moon Cakes

Kasuma and Sharina are the siblings who are so kind and friendly to me even though I've never met either of them. Kasuma is now 'enjoying' her first maternity leave, they are blessed with a baby boy recently, 10 years after their wedding.
When I read the first few lines Kasuma's email (yep... it was indeed a nice long email) asking for Twilight themed cakes, I was puzzled. Twilight as in twilight zones, twilight in the sky...?
Ha ha ha, it's Twilight Saga.... the novel series by Stephenie Meyer, and the latest craze is prelude to the official screening of New Moon in November. I was even more surprised at how many images of twilight themed cakes have already been posted.
The first square cake is chocolate & chocolate with strawberry cream filling, for students in her class. Kasuma told me that they (the girls especially) were so excited and the very lucky ones got a piece of edward and jacob.
The round tiramisu cake was for her best friends. The cream cheese filling was soft, so for the first time I made the chocolate ring to hold the filling in (i think i made the chocolate too thin, so it broke so easily as seen in the pic)
Thanks for the order, Kasuma. I will definitely search for Twilight the Movie soon, before New Moon is screened.

When i was in high school, the two months after PMR (it was called SRP back then) is one of the most memorable time. There were so much activities for us. We got to to experience life at the Felda under the care of Felda settlers who adopted us for a week (i remember we did a lot more destruction to their palm & rubber trees than it's worth our free labor :D ). We went jungle trekking & mount climbing in Taman Negara with groups from other mrsms, my white canvas shoes turned brown red from the leeches bloody bites and I was screaming to get out of the jungle. I learned to bake cream puffs which I think is the best I've ever tasted. We were briefed of what subjects we should be taking the next 2 years, which i opted not to study biology since i don't think i could handle another experience of dissecting a frog. I got to be the commando to lead the 5.30am exercise routine (for the girls lah...), after enduring the training by the real commandos. There were so much more....
As for my two teenage kids after their PMR exam, Syamil enjoyed his time mostly in front of PS3, Wii and Xbox; the girl Sue went on a trip to Malacca and did a lot of other activities at her school.
Nizaha wanted a suitable theme for the 'naughty', smart students in her Form 3 class; I chose to make these emoticons because they are the easiest and fun.
I'm sure some of them will accept the offers to join mrsm, govt boarding schools, sekolah teknik etc... after the pmr result is out, usually around christmas. So, cherish this moment with your friends kiddos! Thanks for the order Niza.

For Princess Ain

Thanks to Facebook I've managed to connect to many of my old friends (excluding a few ghosts of my past... :D). Except for a few who resides in northern part of malaysia, the last I met most of them was a quarter century ago, oh dear... I am soooo old.
Tie wrote on my wall that she'd like to order a cake for her daughter and wanted the pic of Ain to be edited to dress like a princess. A few nights later when hubby saw me looking confused in front of of my lappie he asked me why. When I told him about Tie's request, his reaction was "what...? you said u can do it?", and my reply was "err... yes".
I think the picture turned out okay (hubby agreed too), except that Ain doesn't like to see her red haired :(
Tie also ordered some 100+ cupcakes for all the kids at Ain's kindy (PASTI) too. Thanks Tie!

Roses & Heroes Cupcakes

From Mabel to her hubby, her hero...

Mabel initially requested for pink, white and choc cupcakes with roses and hearts. A few days later Mabel called asking to add transformers, batman and superman too, which I kindly informed that I'd only be able to make the logos only. They are newly weds so I guessed the cupcakes are for both of them to enjoy their own individual pieces. Thanks Mabel, I'm glad you like it.

Brown Hantaran Cupcakes

The thought of making cakes or cupcakes for hantaran always makes me worry because all the paraded gifts are admired for their aesthetic value.
Nora asked for hantaran cupcakes for with brownish gold theme. Gold ??? I've never used edible gold dust although have been shown the method in Yasmin bakingproject class I attended. I was relief when the samples pictures Nora emailed carries beige/brown/yellow colors.
These roses are made using 2 different methods, 1) using 5 petals blossom cutters 2) using round cutter for every petals. Personally, I prefer the round petals method because the roses appear fuller.
And for bekal during their 4-hour drive to rumah kenduri, these cupcakes with buttercream frosting.

It is really sweet when couple celebrates their birthdays together. Murni and her husband share the same birthday on Hijrah calendar; but they decided to have a cake on hubby's gregorian calendar birthday since hers was during Hari Raya season.
One of the beauty of Arabic language is in its grammatical gender, i.e. masculine (muzakkar) and feminine (muannas), thus the 2 lines of "I love You" messages on the cake. The cake was decorated per a sketch from Murni; the fondant faces were plumpier than her sketch and them actual in person, i'm soooo sorry ya....
This is the 1st time I use chocolate ganache decoration on a cake. The 1:1 ratio of choc bar & cream was too runny, so I added some choc fudge to it. Cake was choc moist & choc sponge with strawbery/raspbery cream filling.. yum!

P/S I guess the smell of ketupat and rendang from the throngs of family members and friends visiting Asyraf on the 1st day of Raya was too overwhelming. Asyraf insisted to be discharged from the hospital on the 2nd day of Raya. . Asyraf's tracheostomy was decannulated, his IV tube removed while we were busy searching for a hospital bed and oxygen tank to place at my mil's house. There were a couple of panic episodes when Asyraf coughed heavily and gasping for breath, and was stabilized when my sil administer him oxygen by mask. He's doing better now judging by how much he enjoyed PS3 guitar heroes jamming session with his cousins. We are also seeking complimentary traditional methods to help him recover....

P/S Asyraf typed a message 2 days ago telling that the doc had informed him that he needed to undergo another op. Ever since he's in HDW we've been communicating by texting on the phone, I kept forgetting to get him a small magna doodle instead. I could see he was in despair, earlier that day his left lung collapsed again when the nurses tried to turn him onto his sides. All I could find myself said to him "...don't worry Asyraf, get better and let's get out of this ward..."

He had the op done just now. A tracheostomy to replace the breathing etc.. tubes in his mouth. Hope to hear him talking/whispering again when we visit him this weekend.....

For Four, doesn't that sound like one of the chic SmartCar models.

These 2 sets were ordered by Yatie. One set of chocolate buttercake & chocolate moist cupcakes with her kids names; then I requested for their favorite cartoon characters to add on the cuppies. My promise to Yatie, if the Barbie & Snow White images turned out so hideous I wouldn't put it on cuppies. Another set was vanilla cupcake with fresh strawberry and cream.

When Yna saw the icing pieces made using color flow method, her reaction was "you're funny mommy". I was even more worried when my daughter Suehaila said, "sapa dia nih.....?" (who's that..) referring to those supposed to be Barbie pieces. Well... here are the actual images I was trying to copy, taken from Yna's bag, tumbler and stationery set.

I sent an obligatory sms to Yatie immediately after I delivered the cuppies (she didn't look at the cuppies earlier because the box of strawberry cuppies was on top of it) ; apologizing if Athirah wouldn't recognize her Barbies on the cupcakes. Reply from Yatie "... looks great; they are so happy :) " Thanks Yatie.

These cuppies were ordered by Sharina, or "achik nana" as she's fondly known by her family, for her little nephew Luqman Aliff.

She provided 4 pics for the edible images, and wanted the cuppies with just a little buttercream and colorful sprinkles. Luqman was cheering so happy when he saw the cupcakes, I could still hear him cheering even when the door was closed as I was walking back to the car. That is one of the many moments that makes baking so meaningful to me.

Number 5 Cake

As if the previous number 1 cake was not difficult enough (ha ha ha.... thanks Niza for your never ending challenges); this new order thru Nizaha was for a number 5 cake with edible image of mom & daughter. No specific theme given. Since the surface on top of the number 5 was so narrow, I printed the edible image on only 1/3 of the A4 icing sheet (balance 2/3 of the sheet for another cupcake order)

The whole cake was vanilla sponge to ease the cutting and shaping process. Cake was baked in an 8" round cake pan and a loaf pan. Excesses after the shaping process were 1/4 of the round cake including a 2" circle, and about 1/4 from the loaf pan; more than enough for my snack, and...my waistline too ;(

Cake was made with 15% less sugar this time after being informed by Nizaha that the previous Num 1 cake was a tad too sweet (thanks again Niza for the feedback)

Number 1 Cake, with Dibo the Gift Dragon

Getting cake orders from Nizaha always excites me. She always request something new for me to try. This Number 1 cake is for her daughter's birthday; choc & vanilla cake layers with sliced peaches filling. Also requested were edible image of her very cute daughter with her 2-toothed grin and Dibo the Gift Dragon theme.

I had politely refuse to make the number 1 cake for a few of my new 1st time customer in the past (i'm sorry....), but with Nizaha I just had to give it a try.

The number 1 pan was not available in this area, getting it delivered from KL would mean I had to pay double for the already expensive pan price to cover for the delivery charges. My solution after googling; baked it in an 8" square pans, then divide it into 1/3 and 2/3. The 2/3 portion became the main body, the balance 1/3 divided again ito 3/4 and 1/4 for the base and upper left "lip". This way I could fit the cake on the standard 12" cake board.

I got another order immediately after Nizaha's sister saw the cake. Thank you so much Niza!

Pink Theme Cupcakes

Emi is Asyraf's friend who's keeping my sil Kak Yan company while taking care of Asyraf in the hospital, thanks Emi. Her favorite color is pink. This set was requested by Kak Yan to surprise Emi on her birthday and to bring a little cheer to both of them. Most of the cupcakes were given to the nurses.

P/S Asyraf is now in HDW (high dependency ward) His condition suddenly turns worse 2 days ago after his spinal surgery, while trying to get up to sit for the first time after one month since the accident. One of his lungs collapsed, suspected due to blood clot. Looking at him with all the wires and tubes is really heart wrenching. Please help to pray for his recovery....

This order came from Reen, requested strawberry & chocolate cupcakes to celebrate arrival of Ramadhan (and her birthday) with her family in Perlis. Thanks Reen!

These are mostly moist chocolate cupcakes (with a few vanilla cupcakes) topped with a layer of chocolate fudge and/or whipped cream. I hope the cupcakes made it back to Perlis okay, since the strawberry quickly turns soft after I washed them just before placing on the cupcakes.

Read over the internet that fresh strawberry can only last 4 to 5 days after picking. Since these are from Driscoll's USA, I believe 3 days have passed before they hit the local supermarket shelves here. So.... in future I will only confirm fresh strawberry cupcakes order 2 days before delivery, that is if the strawberries are available at the local supermarket ;) The Gunung Jerai (Kedah's highest mountain) strawberry farm project has started to bear some fruits since early this month, hope to see their strawberries here in near future.

Terima kasih Murni for ordering & sending me these pics. I only had 10 mins to pack these when Murni sms me that she's on her way to pickup the cuppies early in the morning; didn't have time to snap any pics myself :)

Designs of the cuppies were specifically requested by Murni, except for the fondant house & daisies. These are for her kids birthdays in August. Murni told me that her 4yr old was excited since she was wearing pink tudung just like my fondant version of AnaMuslimah magazine character. Thank you Murni, nanti bila ada masa yg sesuai K Ana jemput mai rumah buat kek & fondant decor, insyaallah.

Murni also sent this pic of the melted fondant deco on buttercream, but also told me that the cupcakes were left for a while in the car without aircond running. Fuh... lega, anyway I do find that the ready made fondant from Bakerland is too soft and will not dry up as easily as my homemade version.

I was not able to visit the bazaar because of other urgent matters, wanted to see if the cupcakes topping could stand the humidity & heat under the bazaar tents. One lesson I learned, it is not a good idea to keep the cupcakes in its individual fully enclosed dome cases under such harsh condition especially if the topping contains dairy. About a dozen balance cupcakes left were removed from sale on 4th day. The extra ones made with this order and left in my kitchen are still good even after 6 days, hmm............

Yatie ordered these cuppakes to surprise hubby on his birthday the very next day (thanks Yatie). Yatie wanted green and red buttercream; but I added plain/white buttercream for contrast and the pinky red above is the closest I could come up with before turning the buttercream bitter from too much coloring gel.
Cupcakes were delivered to a Perodua showroom nearby. Ha ha ha... I think even the staffs there could not recognize the models of these perodua cars icing transfers :D

Ben 10 Cupcakes

Cikgu Mira requested hand drawn images of Ben10 on only half of the cupcakes. This is my first attempt using buttercream to draw the outline. The advantages compared to using melted choc/candy is that the images are easily transferred onto the cupcakes; using melted choc always causes the images to crack and the bc flooding does not stick to the outline. But, with buttercream outline the images becomes easily smeared. Anyway, Syahmi was happy when he saw the cakes, that's what really matters. In keeping with yellow, brown & green plus B & W color theme, only Goop, AlienX, Humungosaur and Echoecho were drawn. Thank you Cikgu Mira for your order.

Annie is one of the postgrad students from a group of three who are currently helping me as part of their assignment in Cyber Marketing class. She picked up the cupcakes while on her way to visit her grandpa & aunties. Was glad that she & her aunts liked the cupcakes, even though I didn't follow the design she requested thru an email just a day before. Thanks Annie, for everything.
The extra cuppies were turned into this, our family pic including my helper & Yna's pet goldfishes.

Hantaran Cake - Blue Theme

This is my first order of hantaran cake. Hidayah wanted 1kg choc cake with buttercream.
I was definitely nervous to put my novice cake decorating skill on a hantaran cake that should be aesthetically pleasing to join the parade of gifts for the engagement ceremony.
The fondant pieces were piped with melted choc underneath them as barrier against the buttercream, after 8 hours they seem to hold their shape quite well. Hidayah was delighted when she came over to pick up the cake, thank you so much Hidayah.

Swirl Roses Cupcakes

First of all, I'm sorry Nora...
Nora called the night before these cupcakes were delivered that she wanted 'similar' design cupcakes like the one she ordered previously; wanted it just for makan2 with her kids.

She informed me during her last order that her kids like chocolate, so I made some with choc fudge topping. I got some free time, so I made those swirl roses and attempted the basketweave method.
Nora's expression when she received the cake "......macam lain pulak..."(i.e. different). I just had to ask why she wanted the very simple design as her previous order and I got the answer "...yang ni nampak macam banyak icing". Barulah faham la ni, Nora prefers cupcakes with very little icing.

Strawberry & Chocolate Cupcakes

Kim likes the color combo of choc, white and pink on the cupcakes I made before. She really wanted the strawberries and wouldn't mind the extra charges. Was glad that I managed to find a box of just the right size strawberries at JJ.
Kim expression when she got her order "Pretty!", thanks Kim. The cupcaks were choc moist with choc fudge and buttercream topping, plus 250g strawberries.
As for Yna, we were relieved that it wasn't the dreaded TypeA flu; just a normal high fever with rashes. I found out later from her teacher at kindy that 3 of her friends were down with chicken pox last week. When Dr Shah the paediatric first met her in the hospital, her only words to him was "saya tak mau cucuk" in her manglish accent.Tough luck dear, here's a pic of her with the drip on her hand which she called "A Big Yellow Ant". She was discharged after spending 4 days in the hospital ward (Alhamdulillah...) she fondly called 'my room', since she doesn't have her own room at home.

Ben10 Choc Cake for Adam

This order came from Mas for her son. Mas wanted it delivered to Adam's babysitter's house where they had a birthday party for Adam. Adam was definitely excited to see his face with Ben+his 10 alien force forms on the cake.
Thanks Mas for requesting just a simple choc cake (it was choc moist & choc sponge layered with choc fudge). I was in a hurry to send Yna to the hospital because she's been having fever for 5 days, prescription from the local paediatric 3 days earlier did not cure her fever.

Cupcakes & Top Cake for Aqiqah

Aqiqah is celebration of the birth of a child in Islam. 'Cukur jambul' ceremony whereby a little portion or all the hair on the baby's head is trimmed are usually performed during aqiqah for newborn babies. These cupcakes and a top cake were ordered by Aisyah for her son's, nicknamed Q9, kenduri aqiqah last weekend. Q9 has a cute litlle mole near his nose.

Design of the cake and cupcakes as requested by Aishah consists of cupcakes topped with colorful buttercream and pink/purple/blue/green/yellow fondant decors in the shape of stroller, footsteps and Q9 face; plus a simple topcake with a pair blue baby booties. Aisyah wanted the cuppies to be meriah (colorful) to attract the kids.

I changed the detail piping on the fondant from white royal icing to melted chocolate in the hope that it would lure the kids to eat the fondant decor too :)

First of all, sorry Wawa, the cuppies deco left a lot to be desired. The sagwa pics were too small, the alphabets too thin, the kitty paws were ..... (I let you find a word for it).

I know something's wrong the minute my daughter said "awat banyak sangat W", my reply... "w for Wawa..." hu hu hu, the paw prints look like messy W's :( I only had less than an hour to complete them, I thought afternoon delivery means 2:30pm , not 1:00pm.

Maybe I was just thinking too much of these baby foodprints...

(there's a whole lot more of baby stuffs where these came from, tunggu.....)
